Since ancient times, the turn of the year was regarded by the Celts as a sacred threshold: a moment suspended between past and future, between darkness and new light. In this special time, what had been could be gently released, allowing the new to begin with clarity and strength. Water and light—the primal forces of nature—played a central role: water as a symbol of purification and renewal, light as a sign of hope and new beginnings.
This simple ritual draws on these ancient beliefs and invites you to consciously shape the beginning of the year.
You will need:
• a bowl of fresh water (symbol of purification and life)
• a candle (symbol of light that guides the way)
• a sheet of paper and a pen
How to begin:
1. Reflection
Light the candle and gaze softly into the flame. On the paper, write down what you are grateful for from the past year and what you are ready to leave behind.
2. Cleansing
Dip your fingertips into the water and gently touch your forehead or hands. Imagine old burdens and lingering heaviness flowing away from you.
3. New Beginning
Turn the paper over and write down a wish or a quality you would like to welcome into the new year.
4. Intention
Hold the paper briefly over the candle flame (without lighting it) and quietly speak your wish. Then place the paper beneath the bowl of water.
5. Closing
Remain in stillness for a few moments, contemplating the candle and sensing into your wish. The following day, you may burn the paper outdoors or place it in the earth, entrusting your intention to the elements and setting it gently on its way.
