The symbolic power of spring in the Dolomites

Springtime in the Dolomites is marked by a phenomenon that can only be seen in those secluded Alpine regions that are blessed with a favourable climate. The cold temperatures of winter result in air so clear and pure that the light at the equinox is of a particular luminosity and colour intensity.

Our Celtic ancestors, who developed their extensive nature teachings in the forests of central Europe, celebrated this time of rebirth with a festival in honour of Ostara, the herald of spring. The Celtic calendar was based on the phases of the moon: today’s name “Easter” and the tradition of celebrating Easter Sunday on the Sunday following the first full moon of spring are derived from the customs of the Celts. According to legend, Ostara laid an egg that she carried and kept warm for thousands of years before releasing it into the darkness. When it finally broke open, the yolk rose into the sky and became the Sun, whose light in turn gave rise to great riches of water, plants and living creatures on Earth. The Easter eggs that are traditionally given at Easter thus symbolise the origin of all life.
